Can Smoking cause piles?

The most common dangers of smoking that we all know are coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, lung disease, and much more. But did you know that smoking can cause piles too? Lifestyle and dietary habits play an important role in causing piles.

Cigarettes contain several harmful substances such as nicotine, arsenic, ammonia, acetone, methylamine, etc. The nicotine present in cigarettes can cause something called vasoconstriction which results in poor blood circulation and high blood pressure. Vasoconstriction causes the blood to struggle to get to the blood vessels of the anus. This can encourage the formation of piles or hemorrhoids. Secondly, inhaling nicotine present in cigarettes over a period of time can darken or blacken the intestinal tract. The inhaled smoke thus can cause the absorption of water from the intestinal walls. This can result in dry stools and constipation. Some people have developed a habit of going to motion only after smoking a cigarette in the morning. Though this is largely psychological, the warmth provided by the smoke stimulates the intestinal movement. This is perfectly similar to having a hot cup of coffee or water in the morning. This habit though may seem to be beneficial initially leads to constipation and other health issues like colon cancer in the long run. Constipation, as we all know, is the number one cause of piles or hemorrhoids. So quit smoking today to lead a healthy life.
