What are the chances of hemorrhoids coming back after banding?

Rubber band ligation is one of the treatment procedures for piles or hemorrhoids. In this procedure, the hemorrhoid is tied at its base using a rubber band which cuts off blood flow to the piles. After the banding, the hemorrhoids shrink and falls off in about a week’s time. This treatment is mostly done in people with internal piles. Rubber band ligation is a safe and effective treatment option for internal piles.

Although rubber band ligation can be done for all degrees of internal hemorrhoids, it is most effective in treating 1st and 2nd-degree hemorrhoids. The recurrence of piles in the banding procedure depends on the number of banding done. Usually, it has been observed that if more than 4 bandings are required the probability of recurrence was slightly higher. But even if it recurs, it has been observed that after any subsequent treatment the recurrence rate was low. So rubber band ligation is a safe and recommended procedure for removing first and second-degree hemorrhoids.

Rubber band ligation is an out-patient procedure and does not require any hospitalization. This procedure can be done with or without endoscopic guidance. However, the recurrence rate is higher when this procedure is done without endoscopic guidance. Rubber band ligation is also recommended for patients with any degree of internal hemorrhoids who are unfit for surgery or anesthesia.
